The toy looks a little bulky, and it is, but not in ways that you'd really expect, it snaps apart just about everywhere, and it is hard to tell whether you've broken something. But whether in robot or vehicle mode, this toy looks cool, the flames don't really add anything for me, not sure if they make Optimus look better or not, but he really transforms, and it's quite spectacular. At the climax of his transformation to autobot mode, his automorph technology slides a couple of pieces into place at once and it makes it seem as though you're actually holding animation.
The recommended age on this product is 5-12. It states on the box that it is a level 4 difficulty to transform, and don't underestimate that. I barely managed to transform it in under a half an hour, but maybe you'll have more luck than I did. It is quite heavy compared to most other transformers toys. I've only ever bought the deluxe models and they are nothing compared to the weight of this Optimus Prime. So, if you're like me, and just love transformers, then you'll love this, but if you have a child who thinks it's cool (which it is), be prepared to transform.

After reading some reviews, I was impressed to see that Transformers Optimus Prime looked good in robot and truck mode. On it’s arrival I was not disappointed. Once I got Optimus Prime out of the package, which was not easy, my 11 year old son took it. He pulled things in different directions for about 20 seconds, decided that things were a little complicated, so he wanted to look for an on-line tutorial. He already has an older transformer that is relatively complex, and I was never able to figure that one out. We expected this to be tougher, so I wasn't surprised that he did not transform it immediately.
After playing with it for a while, I found that it wasn’t as tough as I first thought. He said it took me about 15 to 20 minutes, it couldn’t be so bad. He decided to do it on his own and had great fun with it.
After you’ve done it a couple of times, it might not take more than 5-6 minutes to transform Optimus Prime into a truck, but it is still intricate enough that it will not be boring for a child. The Optimus Prime Transformer is not something that will get cast aside after a few days. Turning it into a robot is relatively trivial. If you merely pull everything outwards, it becomes self explanatory fairly quickly. But there will still be a little taxing, especially the first couple of times, and there will be a few things that need a little tweaking to make them work.
I would not recommend the Optimus Prime Transformer for a five year old, or for anybody who tends not to be good at puzzles or similar toys. But if you don't mind a good challenge, you end up with an impressive looking robot and truck. Make sure that the child's expectations are set correctly, it can be good for a variety of skill levels. Let them know that it will take time to figure out, but it will be fun trying to do it.
